August 8, 1999: Catastrophe from Hutchinson

Start Time: End Time: Total Time: Computer's Time:
13:00 20:55 7:55 4:44:10
Distance: Ave. speed: Ave. with rests: max. speed:
53.72 mi 11.3 MPH 6.8 MPH 23 MPH
Unicycle Ridden: Total Dist.:
Coker 36" - 150 mm 602.60 mi
Weather:
Nice, but hot at times.
Rode with:
Jamey, Irene, Dick, Tammy, Dillion, Dedra, Connie, Andy, Michael, Preston, Cameron, Kato, Peter, Jake, Neil, Kris, Colin, Mike, Gabi
Route:
Started in Hutchingson at the Cotters farm and started to ride on the Luce Line trail. Then we rode on some County rodes because the trail was unfinnished and not paved.
Notes:
What could go wrong… did go wrong. We didn't know that the trail was not finnished until we were in Hutchinson, and most of didn't know until we got to the part of the trail that was all grass. So we ended up getting off the trail there and going to a gas station and got a map. Only one person knew the way to get onto the rode that we were going to ride on so we started to follow them there and a few people got left behind at the gas station... oops! They ended up riding back to the Cotters farm and got a ride in a car to another city that was on the path. This meeting place was communicated to us through cell phones that were running out of juice because they weren't recharged the night before. Well, we got to the town, ate there, but never found them. We guessed that they went on the trail because they may have thought that they missed us. We looked for the trail and ended up on the other side of town of where it was. So, most of the group stayed on the county roads while 3 people went on the path just in case the others were on it with the plan of meeting in a town 10 miles away where the rode meets the path. The two groups stopped in town, but stopped to wait at different places. Once we got word from a biker that the others were somewhere else, Jamey went to go fetch them. When they came back, they just kept going because we weren't visible from the path at that time and we didn't know where they were and waited for a while.

So, now we were in 3 different groups, two groups of four, and one group of 12. The group of 12 were the farthest from the end on the trail and decided to just go. Three of us (Kato, Michael Kempf, and I) from that group raced to catch up to the group of four that we were waiting for earlier. We could tell that unicyclists have been on the trail because of the sine-like waves that were left behind by the tires. It took a while, but we did eventually catch up to that group. Once we caught up, we rode a little farther and decided to call it quits because we had a ways left till we would reach the vehicles. We got off the trail and went to the intersection of 110 and 6 where thought we could be picked up from the vehicles. At a local gas station, we tried to call the people in the vehicles and they didn't pick up, then we called their home and Irenes dad came to pick us up, but didn't get there untill over an hour later. I ended up in that group. The other group that didn't make it back to the vehicles got feed and also a huge donation for MS from a local Inn.

Rode with:
Lots of NUC'99 participants!
Route:
From the Summit Inn and downhill to a nearby Park.
Comments from other unicyclists:
I heard "you're cheating" quite a bit from some of the other unicyclists as I flew by them.

Nice, easy, short ride… started late, ended early (timewise).

July 24, 1999: Along the Mississippi

Start Time: End Time: Total Time: Computer's Time:

Temperature: Weather:
83°F Cooled down quite a bit from what it was earlier that day.
Rode with:
Ashley, Ryan, Andy, Connie, Neil
Route:
Started at the Cotters and rode along the Mississippi river and under HiWay 694 (or was it 494 :), then we rode back through the sidestreets.
Notes:
15 miles seemed like nothing! Maybe it was because of my new seat… I modified my old style Miyata to have some added comforort. It's a big ass seat too. I made a cover for the seat and it's made of fake fur, then I put in some neoprene, half inch of it, then I also put an inner tube in it and inflated to comfort. It's still not the perfect beast, but was a little better.

Notes:
After doing 36 miles earlier that day, this ride didn't seem all that bad. My whole body kinda had a dizzy feeling at times during the ride, but all was well. This ride made it be the longest I've riden in one day. 56 miles.

Notes:
Easier ride than last Sundays ride, although the pain from the seat was still there. I fell off twice which has never happened to me before. The pedal rolled under my foot and off it went. I just landed on my feet. I dunno if the pedal didn't want to turn, or if it was just me getting a little fatigued. Anyways, I'm going to switch pedals, as I've been wanting to get some medal ones on my Coker. Afterwards we went the the Casino in Hinkley and ate at the all you can eat buffet (I lost a whole one dollar, while Kato won about $10... beginners luck).

Notes:
Found out the hard way not to carry big objects that can catch the wind… I was riding over a bridge and carrying a large frame wrapped in a plastic bag and the wind caught it and knocked me off my Coker on my Wednesday (MD's B-day!) commute. I got a scar on my left knee about 2" in diameter. Ouch!

Route:
Started in Mankato and ended in Faribault on the Sakatowa Trail.
Notes:
Smooth trail and the longest ride I have ever gone on. I woke up in the morning with a headache and the headache returned during the last half of the ride. Along with the headache, every muscle in my body (so it seemed) was in pain, especially my back and neck. Towards the end, we were taking a lot more breaks, some every mile, it also seemed like the ride just kept going and going and going and going and going. Was it worth it? Sure, I passed the 300 mile mark!

Nice smooth trail with no hills and no wind. Can't get much better! This is my fastest average yet. It was at 12.3 MPH before me and Kato hit town, but we decided to ride slow and cool down for the last mile.

Colin, Ashley, Ryan, Andy, Kato, Cameron
Route:
Colin's house to Long Lake park. Then we rode on the bike trail to hiway 65 and then took the sideroads to Lindseys. Then back to Colins.
Notes:
Easy little ride. Sometimes when crossing streets, Andy would yell clear to cross the street, but sometimes it was a little close.

Route:
Gateway Trail - started at Mahtomedi High School and rode to the gateway trail and rode to the small park. Then we went on the rode to Stillwater. Went wading in the water, and rode on a rode that went straight back to our cars.
Notes:
Nothing like starting out already sore! Doing the night ride the night before and being in the Grand Old Days parade earlier in the day made this ride even harder. The parade was a really long one too… probably rode 10 miles on my double wheeler in that. Going uphill was a killer near the river.

Route:
Ride starts at the Historical Fort Snelling History Center, riding through Fort Snelling State Park, past the International Airport, the military cemetery, crossing the Minnesota river on Old & New Cedar Ave., through Eagan and Mendota Heights on the Big River's Trail, back across the Mendota Bridge to finish at the Historic Fort Snelling.
Comments from bicyclists:
The bicyclists were impressed. A lot of "that's cool" and "you guys are awesome". I got a few comments at the end from some bicyclists that they liked our idling at the stop light.
Notes:
Moonlight River RambleVery fun night ride! Some bumps are a bit surprising, but the Coker just 'flys' over them. There were a few places in the trail where is was completely dark. It felt really weird going through those areas. Kato and I got our average way up in the last few 7 miles. Going up some slight inclines we passed a lot of bicyclists (they had it in low gear). This was my very first night ride and was a lot of fun. The ride was an organized cycling event by Pro Events International and there are a few details about the ride at <http://www.pro-events.com/mrr.html>.

Temperature: Weather:
70°F A blue-grey sky which made it dark. Little wind.
Route:
South on Lexington to Cummings Park (we have a show there tomorrow). Then I went through the paths and ended up at Snelling and hiway 96. Went west on 96 to cross hiway 10 and 35W. Then I went north past Edgewood Middle school till I got to Cty. Rd. H. I went east on H and took another rode to Cty. Rd. I. where I took the path through Shamrock Park and then through the open space. I finished the ride by going south on lexington to home.
Comments from non-unicyclists:
Some groups of kids in a couple places yelled "Cool" and "That's Awesome!" A group of adults at a party in their backyard yelled a whole bunch of things, most I didn't catch. One thing said was "where's the handle bars?" Hmmm… I was holding onto the seat :-).
Notes:
A few miles in the ride I was getting sore… It must have been a while since I rode last. After a while though the leg pain went away and other pain set in (time to invent a new seat!?!). The ride was pretty nice. It felt cool out, but once the sun went down the gnats (bugs) came out and I accidently made them my dinner (and also some inhailed through my nose and others in my eyes).

May 30, 1999: Rain, Wind, Hills... Why?

Rode with:
Lindsey, Andy, Jake
Route:
Rode from restaurant into the wind, uphill in the rain.
Notes:
Why did we attempt this? Oh yeah… Jake was like 4 miles from having 100 miles. Lindsey couldn't keep up (and didn't have a raincoat) so we went slow and got picked up early. Going uphill into the wind with pouring rain is not much fun.

Rode with:
Ryan, Kato, Cameron, Kris, Colin, Jake, Tammy, Dillon, Dedra, Dick, Andy, Connie, Ashley, Lindsey, Tammy Marsh, Tanya Marsh
Route:
Started about 30 miles south of Linton, North Dakota and rode back.
Notes:
I was cruising at the beginning going an average speed of 12.7 MPH up and down the hills. We stopped at the river and got partially wet (some went all the way in, and not all were on purpose)… that felt really good on the very sunny day. I got lucky and was one of the few that didn't get sun burned. Lots of distinct tan lines appeared on the bodies of the other unicyclists. Shortly after the jump in the river we stopped to eat for a while. From there, there was 13 miles left and that was a killer because we were going across the wind and the wind pushes you to the side. A real pain to ride in and it killed my average.

Temperature: Weather:
60°F Cloudy, light rain for quite a while and some heavier. Heavy wind from the west.
Rode with:
Kato, Cameron, Kris, Ryan, Ashley, Irene, Jamey, Schwartzy, Connie, Neil
Route:
From Flake (Forest Lake High School), went east on 97, then north on 96 where it later joined with 8 and we rode to Taylors Falls. Then I rode up the hill in the St. Croix Valley, then got a ride up to where the others that didn't go up so that I could finish with them to the end which was at the Ulmer's cabin.
Comments from non-unicyclists:
Lots of horns.
Notes:
Another 30 miler. The first few miles I felt sore muscles in my thighs, but after a while that went away and I was cruisin'. I got a new maximum speed of 24.5 MPH (39.4 km/h). WOW! I didn't know I was going that fast, but I was in the lead and takin' easy so that I didn't get to far in front of anybody else. On a hill Kato passed me up maxin' out at 18.9 MPH, so I decided to catch up and keep pace with him. I think during the time I was catching up was when I got my maximum speed, but it didn't seem like I was going that fast. I drank plenty during the ride and afterwards I ate a lot along with everyone else. Going into the wind really sucked and when we stopped to wait for the slow group, we got cold from the wind.

After the ride we played around at the Ulmers cabin... only one person got wet after seeing a bottle rocket firecracker about to go off a couple feet in front of her.

Route:
North on Lexington, then east on I, north on Hodgson, east on Cty. Rd. J past movie theater to some lake. Went south on the street next to the lake. Got on another path that went 'round White Bear Lake. Went through the townstreets of White Bear Lake then west on 96 on the sidewalk. Then south on White Bear Ave and got lost. Got disorientated, found Cty Rd. E and went the opposite way of home (get extra miles that way!)... turned around and went towards home on E... I eventually got onto Cty. Rd. F going west. Then I turned north onto Hodgson, west on 96, through the community center area and back home.
Comments from non-unicyclists:
Kids in white rusted truck yelled "Faggot!", I didn't respond, but came up with this comeback in case that happens again: "Sorry, I'm not Bi!"… OK, so they both aren't the same meanings, but it's along the same lines (You do get the pun, don't you?). At the first gas station a guy said, "nice way to get around!" There was also 2 guys, a girl and some clapping as I passed by. Lots of typical reactions from motorists: thumbs up, slowing down, waving, horn honking... I got the "doo doo do do..." circus stuff once from a guy in the bleachers at a baseball game.
Notes:
Longest ride yet. I got two M-DM-D of 6.83 mi, from my first and second stops… odd that they were the same. If I could keep my shorts dry, I'd be ridin' with no discomfort.

Nice loop, I got the maximum speed of 24 MPH on the smooth rode that parallels the airport runway. I had to catch up to Kato (world champion racer). I think I was going into the wind then too.

28" seemed slow… maybe shorter cranks would help, or just ride the Coker.
